(More customer reviews)I've been looking for a new watch the last several weeks and scouring Amazon for a good deal on an attractive, everyday watch. Honestly, I never paid attention to the Armitron listings, as the first thing that name brought to mind was the inexpensive, colorful plastic banded, digital watches from when I was 10yo. I have to say, my opinion has changed.
I happened across this watch at Wal-Mart in an after Christmas clearance section and to my surprise, fell in love with it immediately. It's not overwhelmingly glitzy, but it does have enough crystals and sparkle to it to make it eye catching. I have large hands and wrists, but the band was still *just* large enough to fit me without needing any type of extension (most watches/bracelets fit me just slightly too snug without alteration.) The watch itself is a little thicker than other watches I've had, but not awkwardly so - I'm chalking this up to the additional room needed to make this an automatic watch. Overall, proportionately, it's a great fit for me. It *may* feel a little heavy or large on someone with very delicate wrists, depending on what you're used to.
I REALLY wanted to give this watch 5 stars, but have one hesitation. Because of the open design (to see the inner workings of the watch - which OBVIOUSLY is a big draw to the style) the hands can be a little difficult to see. I find myself shifting the watch as I look at it to catch the light just right so I can easily see the hands. My vision is good and I don't mind the trade off for the beauty of the piece, but it's not something you can just take a quick glance at.
Last thing - the price. Wal-Mart listed the regular price for this watch at $99 and change, but I picked it up on clearance for $50. I came here to see if I got a good deal on the watch, and I guess I did. I'm not sure if the $135 list price is inflated or not, but now that I've got my hands on it, I'd feel comfortable spending in the $100 range for this watch. This coming from someone who rarely spends money on herself and squeezes every penny for what it's worth.
*EDIT - UPDATE! 2/15/2010*
Well, so much for pretty.
This is still an attractive watch - I'll give it that. Where my new found disappointment is in it's time keeping skills. I wear this watch nearly 24hrs a day (other than showering or washing dishes etc) so I know it stays wound. That said, I've lost about 10 minutes on this watch since I first purchased it about 6 weeks ago. I like to keep my watch set to the time clock at work, and noticed a few weeks ago that it was off by 5 min. At first I thought maybe the clock was reset, but now I see that it's actually the watch.
I went through the Armitron website and called their service number, and was given another number to call. After talking to a very nice gentleman, he informed me that automatic watches are not great time keepers, and that differences of up to 15 seconds a day was considered acceptable. I wasn't aware that there would be such a great allowance, and to find that I can't count on my watch for more accuracy is disappointing.
If you're looking for an attractive watch and don't mind having to correct the time every few weeks, then I guess this the watch for you. If I had known this from the beginning, I highly doubt I would have purchased it.
